How to Have a Vacation without Leaving Your Home
Vacations can cause just as much stress as they alleviate. Between the expenses, the organisational demands and all the travelling and packing, taking “time off” is a lot of work.
And if you haven’t got a lot of time to spare, it’s not exactly ideal to spend such a large chunk of it waking up at unnatural hours , dragging yourself and your luggage onto planes and adjusting to jet lag.
So why not consider a vacation in your own home? No packing, no jet lag, no extra expenses and nothing to organise. If your aim is just to unwind and recharge your batteries, you don’t need to get away from your home to achieve that.
All you need to do is…
Set ground rules
It won’t be a vacation if it doesn’t feel different than a regular week or month at home. You need to set ground rules.
Your rules will vary depending on the circumstances of your life and what you want to get out of the staycation, but you should aim to remove yourself from stress triggers and everyday demands as much as possible.
Turn off your mobile phone. Ban email. Unplug the television. Stock up on books. Eat out. Get into meditation. This is your chance to unwind, and staying connected to the chores and stresses of everyday life will negatively affect the depth with which you’re able to do that.
There are all sorts of things to do all around you that you might not have tried before.
Why not play laser tag, or go bowling? Go-karting? Paintball shooting? Hot air ballooning? Why not take a cooking class, head to the zoo or go fishing? If you have a family, play board games or do something together. Go rock climbing or build a treehouse.
Maybe none of those ideas sound good to you – maybe they all do! The point is to open your mind and treat your staycation as an opportunity to take the time to try things that you’ve always wanted to try.
Make sure to unwind
The most important thing is that you actually get a chance to unplug from the stress of everyday life and truly decompress.
Different people do that in different ways, but it’s up to you to do it your way. Above all else, feel peaceful and good and free as often and for as long as possible during your staycation.
