First Home Owner Grant General Information

The First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) scheme was introduced on 1 July 2000 to offset the effect of the GST on home ownership. It is a national scheme funded by the states and territories and administered under their own legislation.

Under the scheme, a one-off grant of up to $7000 is payable to first home owners that satisfy all the eligibility criteria.

Broad principles of the grant are:

  • Eligible applicants must be a natural person (not a company) who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident buying or building their first home in Australia
  • To qualify, neither the applicant nor their spouse (or defacto) can have previously owned a home, either jointly or separately.
  • Joint applicants will be restricted to a single application for a single property. Only one payment will be granted.

Find out if you are eligible for the First Home Owner Grant in just seconds.

If you are buying or building your first home, you may be eligible for further benefits under the First Home Owner Grant Scheme, First Home Buyers Supplement, and the First Home Plus Scheme. The assistance available to you depends on which state or territory you live in.
